Touan: Kyo-yaki and Kiyomizu-yaki, the traditions of Kyoto
Touan, a Kyo-yaki and Kiyomizu-yaki pottery manufacturer, was founded in 1922 in Senyuji Temple, Higashiyama, Kyoto. The patterns on the cups are painted by skilled artisans one by one using colorful glazes. The expressions unique to brushwork, such as blurring, gradations, and shading, and the layering and firing of colors multiple times create depth and three-dimensionality like a painting.
