Touan, a Kyoto-yaki and Kiyomizu-yaki pottery manufacturer , was founded in 1922 at Senyuji Temple in Higashiyama, Kyoto.
The patterns on the cups are painted by hand, one by one, by skilled artisans using colorful glazes. The expressions unique to brushwork, such as blurring, gradations, and shading, and the layering of colors and repeated firing create depth and three-dimensionality like a painting.
