Orangutan Coffee Project
Orangutan: In Malay, orang means man and utan means forest.

For the future of coffee, Ogawa Coffee has been focusing on activities to protect the natural environment of the earth and activities to maintain a sustainable society, and has been working on "what a cup of coffee can do" such as bird-friendly coffee, which maintains biodiversity by cultivating in the shade of trees, and fair trade coffee, which supports the improvement of the lives and independence of producers through sustainable and fair trading. This time, we have decided to carry Orangutan Coffee, which is a new initiative to protect the rainforest.

Indonesia has the largest lowland tropical rainforest in Asia and is said to be the country with the most biodiversity in the world. However, the tropical rainforest is decreasing year by year due to forest fires and illegal logging. As a result, the number of Sumatran orangutans and Tapanuli orangutans, which live in the tropical rainforest, has also decreased, and they are now designated as an endangered species. In order to save this critical situation, the non-profit organization "PanEco" is carrying out orangutan conservation activities (SOCP = Sumatran Orangutan Conservation Programme). Protecting orangutans, who need tropical rainforests, also leads to protecting biodiversity. This project was started by professionals such as world-famous roasters, baristas, cuppers, and coffee machine manufacturers who sympathized with their activities based on this idea and agreed to it.

The Orangutan Coffee Project aims to protect the natural environment in which orangutans live and enrich the lives of local coffee producers through the production of high-quality coffee that attracts many people. The project not only supports environmental improvement in the production area, but also supports activities to protect orangutans and the environment by donating part of the sales of green beans to the conservation group "PanEco" and producers. The production area of Orangutan Coffee, which has these characteristics, is the Gayo District in Aceh Province on the island of Sumatra. It is also known as the production area of certain brands such as Gayo Mountain, Mandheling, and Toraja.
