Bird Friendly® Certified

In the late 1990s, experts confirmed that the number of migratory birds traveling between North and Central and South America was declining. In response to this situation, the Smithsonian Institution, the world's largest academic research institution in Washington, D.C., established the Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center (SMBC). Since then, the facility has been working on the research and protection of migratory birds, and their research has revealed that coffee plantations are related to the habitat of migratory birds.

Traditional coffee cultivation is done in an environment close to natural forests, called shade-grown, where migratory birds use the forests as resting places and feed on the insects that live there. However, in recent years, it has been discovered that the number of migratory birds is decreasing due to the increase in coffee plantations that clear forests and use machines for harvesting in order to reduce costs, resulting in the loss of natural environments. In response, the Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center established certification standards in 1999 in order to maintain farms in environments close to natural forests. The Bird Friendly® certification program was established to protect migratory birds while supporting producers by purchasing coffee beans from certified farms at a premium price.

Ogawa Coffee, which sympathized with this initiative, began selling Japan's first Bird Friendly® certified coffee in 2005. The coffee beans that grow slowly in the forest are of high quality, and the shade-grown method, which provides wind protection and reduces direct sunlight, also helps to create sustainable farms. We want to convey the importance of the natural environment to our customers through the taste of our coffee.

Shade-grown cultivation

Shade-grown cultivation is the cultivation of coffee under the shade created by shade trees. It is a traditional cultivation method that also aims to protect the natural environment, such as forest cultivation and the conservation of migratory birds. In coffee-producing regions around the world, there is a tradition of cultivating coffee under the shade of tropical forests, avoiding direct sunlight.

Fairtrade Certified Coffee

Most coffee-producing countries are so-called developing countries. The price of coffee beans is determined on the international market. Producers who are unable to keep up with market trends far away and have no way of negotiating with traders are sometimes forced into a situation where they have no choice but to sell at prices below the cost of production. As a result, they are unable to earn the profits necessary for production and living, and are forced to live an unstable life.

To prevent such a situation, fair trade is a trading system in which agricultural products and other products from developing countries are imported and consumed at a fair price that takes into consideration the livelihood of farmers, rather than simply purchasing them at market price. Ogawa Coffee obtained a manufacturing license for international fair trade certified products in 2003, and began selling international fair trade certified coffee in 2004.

JAS certified organic coffee

Organic coffee is grown without relying on chemically synthesized pesticides, fertilizers, or genetic modification, making the most of the power of nature. It is a farming method that reduces the burden on the soil and the environment, and is also kind to producers who work on farms. Registered certification organizations inspect farms and manufacturing plants every year to ensure that they are produced properly and in accordance with the rules. Only foods that meet these strict standards are allowed to display the "Organic JAS Mark." Ogawa Coffee obtained organic JAS certification for its Kyoto factory in 2001. In order to deliver delicious coffee to everyone, we are also working to create a sustainable coffee cultivation environment through the sale of organic coffee.

Ogawa Coffee uses ARK beans exclusively for this product.

ARK is a mark of coffee beans exclusively for Ogawa Coffee that meet our unique standards. In order to continue to deliver delicious coffee to more people, we carefully select the ingredients we use to ensure that they match the taste we are looking for and can be delivered to our customers stably. We also value our connections with coffee-producing countries, especially with the "producers," and we continue to strive for better quality by discussing with each other until we are both satisfied.

After-mix manufacturing method

Rather than roasting blended beans with different characteristics in the same way, we roast them separately to bring out the best in the condition and flavor of the beans. We also roast the same type of beans to different depths of intensity to bring out subtle differences in their characteristics and give the beans their own unique flavor and aroma before blending them together.

Uses environmentally friendly packaging materials

We use environmentally friendly "mechanically recycled PET*" for our packaging materials.
*Mechanically recycled PET is made by crushing and cleaning used PET bottles, melting them at high temperatures, reducing the pressure, filtering, etc., and turning them back into PET resin. Compared to non-recycled PET film, this reduces CO2 emissions up to the material manufacturing stage by approximately 40%.

*The coffee bean mix may change without notice depending on price fluctuations, weather and other production conditions, etc. Thank you for your understanding.
